Hola

September 29, 2010

It’s been a while since we wrote one of these so there’s lots to talk about. Firstly, a hello is definitely in order. ‘Hello’.

Recently we left our label 360degreemusic. It was an amicable parting and we thanks them for all their help over the last 12 Months. We felt it would be better for everyone involved, as it allows them to concentrate on working with all the other great bands on their label and it allows us the freedom to scheduling our own releases, collect our own data / revenue and to continue to grow as a song-writing band. We haven’t ruled out looking for another label in the future but for now we’re happy going it alone.

In other news, we have a new agent! Bud at Radar Agency will be the man to contact for bookings from now on.

We’ll be releasing our next E.P ‘Rhyme and Treason’ on the 15th November (scheduled release date) as an unsigned band. It will be available on iTunes so dust off your wallets and buy it! It’s definitely our best set of songs/recordings so far and we’re all really proud of them. There will also be a few limited edition physical copies that will be available at our upcoming gigs and we want you to have them!

The recording of ‘Rhyme & Treason’ was funded with the help of our new friends Strummerville. They are an amazing charity run by some very special people. Visit their site and check out some of the amazing bands that have been helped by the charity.

We recorded this EP at Urchin Studios in Limehouse with our good friends Dan Cox & Matt Ingram who we worked with on our previous EPs. We can’t speak highly enough of these guys. We’ll be working with them again for sure.

Now you might have noticed we’ve been lying low on the gig front recently…Well, we’ve not been twiddling our thumbs. In fact quite the opposite. We’ve been busy writing loads of new songs. About 8 new ones and a couple of re-worked old ones and we’re all really excited about playing them live. “They got grooves yeh.”

So we’ve booked a few dates in London (more dates around the U.K TBA soon) which we’d love to see you at! So far there are:

23 Oct 2010

Bowery Electric (DJ set) New York.

1 Nov 2010

Bull & Gate Kentish Town, London.

3 Nov 2010

Buffalo Bar Highbury & Islington, London.

7 Nov 2010

The Black Sheep Croydon, Surrey.

18 Nov 2010

Hoxton Pony Hoxton, London.

4 Dec 2010

93 Feet East East End, London.

The New York date is a Mahoody DJ set as he’s going over the pond for a few days to enjoy the CMJ music festival. If you are a New Yorker or you’re in NYC then prepare for some dark dark beats etc. Thanks for reading,Gaolers http://www.myspace.com/gaolersdaughter

Helter Skelter/Gambling Problem

July 29, 2010

Hola,

Just sitting in King’s Cross Mcdonalds listening to Tom Waits, making full use of their free wi-fi, and it seemed like a good time to write a blog. We’re playing tonight at the Hoxton Pony for the launch of of this new thing called ‘Hoxton Live Sessions‘ which sounds quite interesting. Our track ‘Sun Coming Up’ features on their first podcast too.

Having seen and wanted to go on the helter-skelter near the strummerville stage at secret garden party, i decided to go on the one at the end of Brighton pier. It was only a pound, and although fairly underwhelming, i still had enough change to go and rinse on the 10p machines. My logic was that the 10p machines would make me more money than the 2p ones. On reflection they both will lose you considerable amounts of money as you sweat, bang the glass, set the alarm off, think about robbing children, and become fully engulfed in a gambling mania that can only end when, having checked all pockets in a panic, you realize you’ve run out of change.

In other news we’re looking to make a video any time soon, so watch out for that! On Saturday 29th, I’m playing two, that’s right, two, solo gigs-one in Bar Mondo in Dartford, and the other in Command House, Chatham. If you’re local to any of these it would be great to see you at one!

Anyway, back to Rain Dogs. “independent as a hog on ice…”

Secret Garden Party

July 26, 2010

Hey,

it’s Ben here.

What a great weekend we’ve just had at Secret Garden Party. We played on the Strummeville stage and, as always, we had a lot of fun hanging out there with the Strummerville crew. Enjoying the warmth of the campfire with us were lots of other bands – Mystery Jets, Rum Shebeen, Supernovas, Wild Wolves, Dekay, The Peeps, Nimmo And The Gaunletts. Overall, the festival had a really good vibe but Alfie’s black eye is testament to the fact that not everyone there was full of peace and love… Nevertheless most people were there to enjoy listening to music in a beautiful countryside setting.

This Thursday (29th) we’re playing a free gig at Hoxton Pony. It’s the launch of a new club night called ‘Hoxton Live Sessions‘. Playing there with us will be Keiran Leonard. We also we feature on the first Hoxton Live Sessions Podcast along with great new band Two Wounded Birds. Look out for them. They’re great! Download it and enjoy. We’re looking forward to a great night on Thursday. See you there.

Now I’m going to sleep…. Nite

Lounge On The Farm

July 20, 2010

Hello there,

I feel an update is in order!

Lounge on the farm was fantastic, we ended up playing three sets-one on the sheep dip stage, where we were booked for, and two on the strummerville stage. The Sheep dip gig went well, apart from me breaking a string which meant we couldn’t play a couple of songs we wanted to. Crowd seemed to love it, even though it was a little early for people to be drunk to dance. The strummerville gigs went really well-thanks to trish and the gang for putting us on there. There was a really nice atmosphere over at the strummerville stage; so good that most of the people we knew spent the whole weekend there, sitting by the fire and getting up to general mischief.

The weekend was a succes for me apart from the last night where it started raining. I’d just finished watching fionn regan so had that fuzzy feeling. Just bought a cup of tea so now had that warm fuzzy feeling. I guess you could say i was happy. Then i got into my tent and it started monsooning it down. My tent didn’t have the outer sheet either (it’s a long story involving convectional evaporation, the wring types of pegs and mould. Big pieces of mould) so i got soaked. Miserable times guys…

But in the morning we went to morrisons for a nice fish and chips with the resident pensioners so it all worked out for the best.

Thanks to everyone who came to the Gig at Proud Galleries on the 15th. It was a really special gig and we all had a great time performing, even though we couldn’t see anything/body due to an overzealous smoke machine. Thanks also to Depot who played a ‘blinder’ and let us use all of their amps and drums and things.

Until next time

Reviews/Reviewers

July 7, 2010

We are very much a ‘grass-roots’ operation with no budget for press or PR. So, we are reliant on bloggers, fanzines and magazines who actually like our music to say so.

Fun on 2 farms

July 7, 2010

Hey guys,

In a few days we’re off to Canterbury to play at ‘Lounge On The Farm’ festival. It’s going to be a great weekend with some amazing bands playing. And the headliners aren’t bad either; Toots and The Maytals and Martha Reeves and The Vandellas!

For those of you going we’re playing a few sets, lucky you!

Friday – 2:15pm @ Sheep Dip Stage

Friday – 8:00pm @ Strummerville Campfire Sessions

Sunday – 11:00pm @ Strummerville Campfire Sessions

Going to be immense. and I hear there is a hog roast which can only mean one thing…I’m going to eat some of it! yessss.

I went to The Hop Farm festival the other day to see Bob Dylan. He was amazing and spent the whole show grinning, something he appears to do only very rarely.

He was wearing a pink shirt and wide brimmed hat. There was a guy in front of me wearing a boater hat and I was getting really annoyed with him because I couldn’t see a thing. I nearly said something to him but then I realised I too was wearing a boater hat. I took mine off and moved somewhere else. Laura Marling was fantastic, and our recording engineer Matt Ingram was playing drums for her, which was an added surprise. Mumford and Sons bored me slightly. Seasick Steve was pretty good and really got the crowd on his side. Here endeth my review.

In other news we’re looking to confirm another tour in September with Strummerville. It will be filmed for a channel 4 documentary so that’s all very exciting. We are %90 confirmed to play this year’s Secret Garden Party. There are also rumors of us possibly going to New York in October to play the CMJ music festival.

But until then, we’ll see you in a field in Kent. can’t wait.

New Tunes/Nigella…

June 22, 2010

Just had a great writing session in our rehearsal room in Shoreditch. Very productive, getting 5 songs pretty much finished.

They are: Everything is Blue, Sex In A Citadel, About My Friend and two others without names yet! One of these we wrote around a riff i’d had bubbling away at the back of my brain for months. Sounds a bit Chris Isaak. Quite dark and very simple, exciting stuff.

The next gig is a low key solo show, just me with my guitar, Nigella. It’s with Tom Williams and the Boat and a couple of other excellent supports. It’s at the very little Betsey Trotwood on the 1st July, in Farringdon so there’ll  be a great atmosphere, making for a sweeet show. So come!!! Keep an ear out for new tunes at this one….

Then it’s Lounge on the Farm, and we can’t wait! If you’re there, come and say hello and we can party. it’s going to be excellent, plus there’s some amazing bands playing too-rather like the Hop Farm Festival which i’m going to in only a few days…i’m counting down the days! PLaying, there’s Ray Davies, Seasick Steve, and some guy called Bob.

Bye

Sharabang Tour Day 1: Brighton

June 2, 2010

Hello, I had just finished writing this blog when my computer crashed, slightly frustrating, so I’ll be brief!

The first day of the ‘Sharabang’ tour kicked off in Brighton, at my favourite venue there, Concorde 2. I have seen loads of bands there and have always wanted to play there, so I was happy just to be on stage. Loads of smoke machines and lights, the two main things to make a good gig.

The Saudis were excellent, playing a really energetic set, as was Nat Jenkins, who played a full band show. Our label-mates The Supernovas managed really well too, considering they had no drummer!

After checking into the hotel, we went to The Pavillion Tavern, normally a really great pub, but that night it was just far too metal! I know I sound like my Dad, but the music they were playing was just noise. Sorry to drag people there!

We ended up on the beach having met up with nearly everyone who played earlier. We all sat round a fire and it was really great getting to know people on the tour. It was starting to get light after I’d finished up my Lambrini, so me and my friend Andy walked home, briefly sidetracked by trying to save an injured owl-and trying to fend off a man who said he’d break its neck as it’s the most “humane thing to do”. Just no.

Thanks so much to everyone who made it down and made it a really great night. Also to my housemate who I wrestled with on the beach.

Ciao, Gaoler’s x
